Getting there: Behind a Shell petrol station in a quiet neighbourhood.

Meal: Lunch

When I took the photos, the owner started being suspicious, thinking I was a competitor. Found out that the owner is from Johor and decided to open a restaurant in Kuantan. It is a little difficult to find as it is behing a petrol station and in a quiet neighbourhood. The property is on a nice piece of land.

The place boasts its specialty, coconut prawn. It is curry prawns served in young coconut. It is unique; the flesh of the young coconut compliments the coconut in the curry, adding a fresh dimension to the curry.

The shark meat was unique as well, but I did not quite enjoy it. It was a little overcooked and felt rubbery. The vegetable was good and one dish they did not overcook.

Remarks: Although tasty, the food seems a little overcooked. Can be quite hot in the day but they have an aircond room in a corner. Most patrons come in the evening.

Historic saltfish trading row of Kuantan. It is as though time stood still. Traders hang their goods on the ceiling and lay the rest on tables for you to select.

Remarks: The place to look for good saltfish. Quality is excellent, probably the best you can find in Malaysia, and some say, probably the world. Shop around.

I had a ghee tosai, quite generous with their ghee as I could smell it while eating. They seem to have expended to the adjoining lot; the adjoining lot seems to have odd décor compared to the main entrance. Hygiene however is something to be concerned about. When I sat at the table, they cleared the table by using the cloth and wiping whatever remains on the table on to the floor. I suppose they clean the floor once a day.

Charcoal steamboat is rare these days with the availability of electric and gas steamboat with superior heat control abilities. The restaurant had a marvelous view of farms, namely their own water cress farm, it is a view to savour. The modus operandi for the steamboat is pick and choose; the more you take, the more you pay. Other than the selection of 2 vegetables, the other choices were frozen food.

They soup is chicken broth with Chinese herbs. They have an ingenious way to prevent smoke getting in to your eyes, they had an extended cone from the chimney of the steamboat making it 1.5 feet higher, making it taller than ones head when seated.

Remarks: Prices here are exorbitantly high and the meals were not appealing as they are mainly frozen food. Unless you are here for the novelty of charcoal steam boat or the view, I would not recommend this place. Good, fresh and cheep steamboats are available in the towns, Tanah Rata, Brinchang and Tringkap, all nearby.

Getting there: Coming from Brinchang, head towards Kampug Raja. Tringkap town is just after Rose Valley. It is a small town and Tringkap Restaurant is in the middle, opposite the town hall.

Meal: Dinner

Just after the tourist zone of Cameron Highlands, namely Rose Valley, is town called Tringkap.Walking past Rose Valley in to Tringkap is like walking in to a different world. Tourist buses are gone and they are substituted with beaten up Land Rover Defender.

Spotting a steamboat sign on their signboard hinted me that they are a steamboat specialist. I was wrong, they seemed popular with dishes and everyone ordered them. I decided to try their steamboat instead. They have generous portions compared to their Tanah Rata and Brinchang counterpart for the same price. Ingredients were surprisingly fresh even for lowland ingredients such as fish.

Getting there: At the end of Tanah Rata town, beside the hospital, on top of Marybrown.

Meal: Lunch.

This seems to be the most popular English tea house in Tanah Rata, probably because it is referred to by the Lonely Planet. The place has a lovely ambiance, almost English like. On one side, it has a beautiful scenery but on the other side there is a newly constructed monstrosity in the form of a bus terminal. Arrived at the restaurant at it’s peak hour where almost all of the tables are occupied. Service was rather slow at that time.

The apple pie came first. I opt not to take it with ice cream and have the pie as it it. It came on a plate with a sprinkle of icing sugar on the top. Biting in to it, the apple seemed too lumpy and lack sweetness. The apple was rather dry too. Was a little disappointed with the apple pie.

The fish and chips came next. The fish is very flat and coated with crumbs; I thought I had ordered fish chips. It did not look appealing and it does not taste appealing either. The fries were overdone and lack salt. Had a vegetarian curry next, this was quite good, good combination of spices and it went well with rice and the fruit chutney.

Had a scone for dessert; it came rather well presented. The scones were still hot and crumbled easily and they tasted good. There was enough cream, strawberry jam and butter to go around.

Remarks: Most House Specialty seems to be vegetarian or have vegetarian variations. Would recommend going for House Specialty and avoid those that are not labeled so. For my case, the fish and chips was not a house specialty and everything else was.

Getting there: In the middle of the Ringlet town area, situated on a corner lot of a shoprow. About 40 minutes drive from Tapah toll.

Meal: Breakfast

On the way to Cameron Highlands from Tapah lies a small town called Ringlet. In the heart of this small town is a quiet spot where the locals hang out to have their breakfast, slowly. More locals seem to hang out here for breakfast compared to other restaurants in the area.

When I sat at the table, the first thing I noticed is the well protected chopsticks. They covered the bunch of chopsticks with a cup; supposedly to protect them from the rain. That gave me a sense of confidence that they have a certain level of hygiene.

I called for a pan mee (hand made noodles) and it came rather fast. They machine rolled the noodles to strips topped with vegetable and minced pork. It has a miso-soya sauce taste to the soup which gave it a unique taste.

The tofu was fresh however the filling was rather bland. Being at the fringe of vegetable capital of Malaysia, the vegetables are very fresh.
