Getting there: Along what seems to be a big circular road. The shop is covered by a big cempedak tree and premises is down a slope beside a tailor (Tukang Jahit Bee Sin). Opposite the shop are a few stalls. Near Pusat Perikanan Air Tawar.

Meal: Breakfast

The shop is very popular in the morning. I see cars parked all along the main road but not a stall around looks busy. The shop seems to be hidden behind a large cempedak tree and difficult to spot.

There is a won ton mee stall on the right and a nasi lemak & meehoon goreng on the left as you enter. People who sit down seems to order won ton mee and those who take-away seems to order nasi lemak. Strange phenomena.

I am no fan of won ton mee, so no comments from me except that it is edible. The nasi lemak is quite good, somewhat Chinese style.

Meal: Dinner

Ikan Kurau Bakar seems to be the speciality. An expensive choice for a fish but well worth the cost. Nasi Lemak comes highly recommended. The nasi lemak is very Chinese style, and for dinner?

The Ikan Bakar was very spicy with strong accents of kunyit. Baked just right with the Kurau soft and juicy. Would recommend ordering the fillet as it is much easier to eat.

Prawns were a tad off and too watery for the spicy thick gravy.

I walked in and was shown a big broad table. As I sat, the menu came with nothing but drinks. Was was asked for a drink and most of them seems unfamiliar. Popular drinks are like the ice kacang equivalent and avocado juice.

As soon as my drink orders were taken, dishes came without ordering. It seems, they have a look at us and determine what we would like. No choosing at this stage. Once the table is filled with dishes, it is time to make custom orders if you have any. An inventory of dishes on the table will be taken and systematically taken away if you have not touch some of them. Basically, they lay out dishes on the field (padang) and you take what you want and they will take back what you don’t want.

At the front, I found a long queue of people waiting for their fried oyster. At the back of the food court is a drink stall and a tai chow. It seems the order is to order your fried oyster at the front and begin your meal at the back and come back to the fried oyster stall to wait for your fried oysters. Did I mention t is a long wait? Yes, I had 2 rounds of tai chow and still have to wait for the fried oyster. A little disorganised it seems, I seem to have been pushed back in the queue. The person before me is long gone. With me hanging around and started to be a little free, wielding a camera around, I seem to be back on the list and the first in queue for the next batch.

Anyway, no chopstick or plates for the fried oyster. They give it to you in a wrap, give them the cash and scram. This is where you table and cutleries from the the tai chow stall becomes useful.

Run by a Chinese – Pakistani couple it seems, so the culinary roots are very close to it’s origin run the Chinese way. The signage at the shop tells some talks about the shop’s history. Starting first with Tandori and Naan, then evolving to some Indian-Mamak items such roti chanai and now Bombay side dishes.

I liked the Naan best, it is moist and tender, not like Frisbees you find in other places; and not too over fermented too. The cheese Naan was nice, and the garlic butter Naan was excellent; not too oily and garlic was finely chopped and mild.

I had some Tandori chicken and it seems to be well cooked.

Not many stalls open early in Melaka. This happen to be one of them for early birds like me. Unfortunately, not many good early works in Melaka. The front of the shops many local looking people in clothes that would be suitable to be worn at home. I think no one would flinch if I wore my pagoda t-shit.

I had difficulty getting the name of the shop because there are not romanised test in the shop, other than the advertisements posted on the wall and the label of my Lipton tea. I got the name translated from pictures I took from the shop. The shop owner is very selectively generous with name cards. Gave to 2 girls who are fashionably dressed taking pictures of each other as opposed to poorly dressed and discretely taking pictures like me.

Biasness aside, from the business card stinginess. Food is average, pretty much like food you’d find anywhere. Edible is an accomplishment in this state and I think they have achieve an edible stage.

Getting there: In the historic district of Melaka. 88 Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker Walk)

Meal: Breakfast

The outside implies a lot of historic connotation and claims to make them the traditional way, and seems appealing being in a historic city. Located in the heart of the historic part of town, the concept seems intriguing.

Decor in the shop looks very 50s with 50s music. However, the interior, although nice, is very messy with 21st century items such as plastic containers.

The sugar with cendol is very nice; however, the coconut is very light and spoils the whole taste. The cendol spots an ice kacang style presentation, which is pretty much modern. My idea of traditional cendol is in a bowl with a little shaven ice from an ice plane (instead of machine shaver).

The yong tau foo set has hints of commercialization. Nice, but does not seem traditional.

The curry puff looks very home made, has lots of curry leaf which adds a strong flavour to the puff. The curry puff is really good.

Location: N02 22.9380 E102 12.6390 Alor Gajah, Melaka

Getting there: Off the Alor Gajah roundabout, opposite the MPAG office. It is at the end lot of food stalls with an island counter.

Meal: Lunch

The stall seems to be the main buzz in the food stall row, in fact, possibly the only buzz in town. The business has outgrown the allocated lot and has expanded to a counter opposite the stall. The counter seems very factory like, with ingredients in bucket and dozen of bottles of chilli sauce and buckets of kuih udang and sauce ready for take away.

The presentation is very much like rojak pasembur, instead of peanut sauce, it is replaced by chilli sauce. The kuih udang was very starchy but edible. Tofu was a little rancid, hardly any vegetable but all other ingredients were ok.

Remarks: If you are in town during lunch and have no idea what to eat, edible food is hard to come by. Edible food with decent service seems to make it big in this town. Not on my recommendation list, but nice to know where to find edible food if you are in town.

Meal: Tea/Desert

There is a cendol stall on the outside with the option of coconut cendol and durian cendol. I decided to go for the durian cendol. I asked the window for a durian cendol and I was asked to get a coupon inside. I went inside and asked for a coupon and was redirected to another counter specializing in selling cendol coupon. Which I then bring back to the cendol window to trade for my cendol. I wonder why the run-around just to get a bowl of cendol and the labour overhead.

It was served on a disposable bowl with a cardboard handle which is recyclable. The duran cendol was unique, quite good durian aroma. Seems like a dodol-jam kind of syrup poured on to the cendol. The price however, is quite steep.

The interior, the shop floor is very interesting with good quality local produce. Their gula melaka being their flagship product. The floor personnel are geared to help you, especially if you look lost.

Getting there: Along the main road at a place called Melaka Raya.

Meal: Lunch

The place claims to serve home cooked food; the chef must be staying in the kitchen to call it home.

I had deserts early; the ice kacang size was surprising, came in a very small bowl and a really petit size. The goodies at the bottom is generous and topped generously with gula melaka syrup. The combination is rather sweet because of the generous spread of the coconut sugar. Quite sloppy work with presentation, my hand got coated with sugar just touching the base of the bowl.

The rice came in a large bowl to be share in the table. I had otak-otak, kangkung belacan and eggplant (brinjal or aubergine) for the main course. The otak-otak is quite good; however, I think it lacked pepper leaf (daun kaduk). The vegetable is quite good too.
