Meal: Dinner

Ikan Kurau Bakar seems to be the speciality. An expensive choice for a fish but well worth the cost. Nasi Lemak comes highly recommended. The nasi lemak is very Chinese style, and for dinner?

The Ikan Bakar was very spicy with strong accents of kunyit. Baked just right with the Kurau soft and juicy. Would recommend ordering the fillet as it is much easier to eat.

Prawns were a tad off and too watery for the spicy thick gravy.

The place does not have a name. It is known to be the best ais kacang in town and some say Malaysia, so the shop keeper claims.

Possibly the best in town, I notice most of the patrons drop by, not because it was good, most do not know what is good. They happen to walk around town and decide to stop by on a hot day.

Horrible cendol but decent ais kacang. Can improve on the size though. Possibly to encourage you to go for seconds. Price a bit steep at RM1.50 for a tiny bowl.

Remarks: They take pride in their ais kacang, claiming that it is the best in Malaysia, especially their red beans. I had really good cendol from Masjid Tanah near by just a day before. Best I ever had, unfortunately, someone “ta pau” instead of bringing me there. I also heard of a good cendol from Seremban to Senawang via the old road. I’d rather go out of the way for these cendol.

Meal: Lunch

Possibly the best Fish Head Curry in Port Dickson. I am not a Fish Head Curry fan, but I am in Port Dickson, where can I find good food during lunch? Maybe the KFC near by which I know serves really huge chicken years ago. Wonder why the size difference in this town.

Service was really good, the moment you step in, they want to get you seated and take orders immediately. The place was half-filled when I was there, with flies outnumbering people. Possibly a good sign of good food or a bad sign of poor hygiene.

The fish came slightly raw in the core, not the first time it happened. It is an indication that they threw in a frozen fish without thawing. After all, raw ingredients in this town seem hard to come by for some reason. The dish must be a proven recipe formula but the art of proper heating seems to be lacking. Or is it because if the increasing cost of gas and they are stingy on heat. Hey, this is an energy town! Power station and petroleum refinery is a stone throw from this place!

The vegetables are really sloppy and they encourage to have side orders such as fried chicken.

The teh tarik I ordered came with a cap. I supposed it s to make it exclusive to me and not share it with the he gang of flies next table. The place is very cool, possibly due to the generous shade provided by a large tree at the entrance.

Meal: Lunch

Went to the place just before lunch hour and there were plenty of seats. However, it got filled very fast as it approached lunch hour. It took a while before drink orders were taken and food orders too. However, once orders were taken, food came very fast.

The bak kut teh came piping hot out of the claypot, served in an aluminum coated basket for people to slide it across the table if the position is not right; served with white rice. Rice was nice and brittle, which absorbs lots of the gravy.

Meat was tender and the soup… or is it gravy was thick and has essence of pepper and heavy on thick soy sauce. The thick gravy with the generous dose of thick soy sauce gave the sense of a thick gravy, however, the flavors of the herbs was drowned by the thick soy sauce and pepper.

Overall, I think it was nice, the pork was tender, the soup was thick, but for me, I would give some demerits of attempting to drown the flavors of the herbs. Bak kut teh should taste like… medicine. It is after all, Chinese medicinal herbs with pork.

Meal: Lunch

I got here just before the lunch crowd, probably the best time to have a meal here. Most would be gone by lunch hour and seats would be hard to come by. By the time I left, chicken was finished and limited strips of char siew, all before noon.

The person taking order seems to be very busy, taking take-out orders, phone orders; conversations seem to be half chicken, half-strip char siew. I remember coming here many years ago when it was not as popular, they served in small quantities with only 1 person manning the small. It seems it had grown quite a lot in popularity, with at least 3 people staffing the stall and quantity of the meats have doubled (so did the price). My meal came up to about RM7 per pax with just char siew. Priority seems to be shoving as much meats as possible to the customers and wrap up by end of lunch hour. They will entertain small orders; but if you come here for the good food, why not have loads of it.

I came here just for char siew, nothing wrong with the roast chicken, very good as well. Probably the best char siew in Petaling Jaya, well… at least the best in PJ that I have tried; juicy, hot, fresh out of the smoker. Same goes for the roast chicken.

I walked in and was shown a big broad table. As I sat, the menu came with nothing but drinks. Was was asked for a drink and most of them seems unfamiliar. Popular drinks are like the ice kacang equivalent and avocado juice.

As soon as my drink orders were taken, dishes came without ordering. It seems, they have a look at us and determine what we would like. No choosing at this stage. Once the table is filled with dishes, it is time to make custom orders if you have any. An inventory of dishes on the table will be taken and systematically taken away if you have not touch some of them. Basically, they lay out dishes on the field (padang) and you take what you want and they will take back what you don’t want.

I was told that there is a cendol on a sidecar at this location; also known as the Kuantan Cendol. Nothing unusual compared to other parts of the country, just got its name for it’s location. I passed this place a few times not noticing a sidecar. This time, I stopped and have a closer look. I noticed that a small corner of AM Bank is a cendol stall with benches, a typical cendol setup.

I figured they must have upgraded in to a proper premises. I had a cendol with red beans.

Cendol seems very natural and the coconut milk is quite thick. The red beans sank to the bottom, not showing much on the surface. Like an iceberg, lots more underneath.

Meal: Dinner

At the front, I found a long queue of people waiting for their fried oyster. At the back of the food court is a drink stall and a tai chow. It seems the order is to order your fried oyster at the front and begin your meal at the back and come back to the fried oyster stall to wait for your fried oysters. Did I mention t is a long wait? Yes, I had 2 rounds of tai chow and still have to wait for the fried oyster. A little disorganised it seems, I seem to have been pushed back in the queue. The person before me is long gone. With me hanging around and started to be a little free, wielding a camera around, I seem to be back on the list and the first in queue for the next batch.

Anyway, no chopstick or plates for the fried oyster. They give it to you in a wrap, give them the cash and scram. This is where you table and cutleries from the the tai chow stall becomes useful.

Run by a Chinese – Pakistani couple it seems, so the culinary roots are very close to it’s origin run the Chinese way. The signage at the shop tells some talks about the shop’s history. Starting first with Tandori and Naan, then evolving to some Indian-Mamak items such roti chanai and now Bombay side dishes.

I liked the Naan best, it is moist and tender, not like Frisbees you find in other places; and not too over fermented too. The cheese Naan was nice, and the garlic butter Naan was excellent; not too oily and garlic was finely chopped and mild.

I had some Tandori chicken and it seems to be well cooked.

Traditional Nasi Padang in the middle of a commercial – government complex. Instead of being served, it is self service. The keropok is left on the table, and does not seem popular.

However, the food is good and reasonable, considering its location. The green chilli pickle is very good. Lontong comes in 2 variations, non spicy with nangka and spicy. The beef jerkey is rather nice.
